Movement, Joy, and Community: How ‘Dance-Sit’ is Improving Lives
At Parkinson’s Equip, we’re committed to supporting projects that bring meaningful change to the lives of people living with Parkinson’s.
Earlier this year, we had the privilege of funding an inspiring dance class that began in January 2024 with just a handful of participants.
Almost a year on, it has blossomed into a thriving community that’s making a profound impact on physical and mental wellbeing.
How it started
Dance artist Hollie had an idea for a Parkinson’s dance class, which we agreed to support through funding.
In early 2024, Hollie and her assistant Mikaela opened the doors to the class and welcome two ladies and a gentleman braving a cold January afternoon to give it a go.
Over the following months, the sessions—then called Shake, Rattle, and Roll—welcomed a core group of three ladies who came every week.
Hollie and Mikaela created a unique seated-to-standing dance experience, ensuring everyone could participate at their own pace.
Although the sessions were filled with creativity, laughter, and connection, attendance remained low, and Hollie assumed the funding would not be renewed.
A fresh start
However, we saw the potential for Hollie’s idea to grow into something bigger.
With a new round of funding, the class relaunched in September under a new name, Dance-Sit.
Hollie and Mikaela moved to a larger venue, adjusted the timing, and expanded their reach. The results have been incredible!.
From five participants in the early days to a weekly group of 18, the class is now so popular it has a substantial waiting list!
This overwhelming demand has inspired Hollie to introduce a second session on Fridays, starting in January 2025.
What makes Dance-Sit special?
The magic of Dance-Sit lies in its thoughtful approach.
The seated-to-standing format ensures inclusivity, while the routines incorporate subtle fall prevention and conditioning exercises disguised as fun dance movements.
Monthly themes, lively music, and a variety of props—including scarves, ribbons, rhythm sticks, and even feathers—add a layer of creativity and amusement that keeps everyone engaged.
The class isn’t just about movement; it’s also about connection.
Each session ends with a hot drink and a friendly chat, creating a warm, welcoming space where participants can bond and share their experiences.

The impact of Dance-Sit goes beyond physical fitness.
For many participants, it offers an invaluable break from the challenges of everyday life and a chance to experience joy, laughter, and community.
Hollie and Mikaela’s energy, combined with their dedication to the participants, has made the sessions a highlight of the week for so many.
Why Quality in Parkinson’s believes in projects like Dance-Sit
At Quality in Parkinson’s, we’re proud to support initiatives like Dance-Sit that bring positivity and empowerment to people with Parkinson’s.
Seeing the programme grow from its modest beginnings into a thriving community of 18 participants (and counting!) is a testament to Hollie and Mikaela’s passion and the incredible potential of creative projects like this.
Without funding, this class would not have been possible, let alone sustainable. It’s heartening to know our support has helped spark so much joy and connection—and we’re thrilled to continue championing this project as it grows.
To Hollie, Mikaela, and everyone involved in Dance-Sit: thank you for bringing such light and laughter into the lives of so many. We can’t wait to see what’s next!
